Guiding post of Gyeongbuk Education

  • In addressing changes in the direction towards which modern society progresses, there is need to pursue diversification, customization and excellence in education, as well as to expand self-control, accountability, and responsibility of schools as they strive for creative innovation. Indeed, such actions are necessary to establish a solid foundation upon which a better and more dynamic education can be provided and promoted. Today, advanced countries are doing everything possible to raise the level of education as the basis for national power, and to train their citizens as to sharpen their international competitiveness.

Morality requires, in addition to moral sensitivity, honesty and frankness. The society of the 21st century requires transparency and impartiality. Honesty is not only the ethical basis of individual behavior, but also for academic and vocational activities, as to make society transparent and fair. Furthermore, honesty is also important for the international community, which also places importance and value on trust and friendship. Indeed, these are the basics needed to elevate the position of the country and to ensure competitiveness in today’s globalized society. Honesty is, on the individual level, a responsibility one carries to his morals, while maintaining the morality of his or her relations, leading to openness. Openness is the open mind able to pay attention to others in human relations and group identities. The essence of life ethic is the frankness that is entrusted to one another, and a kind of honesty that all sides feel.

The flexible thinking generated by the open mind can accept change and respond to the rapidly transforming society. Therefore, the cultivation of honesty and openness through person-oriented education is very important crucial.

Creativity has a close relationship with openness. Creativity is the openness with which one agrees, and with which new ideas and alternatives are proposed in any situation. Creativity is developed and strengthened through education. Education to improve creativity should be strengthened to open a new globalized future and to lead advanced knowledge, information and culture, all of which are evolving at high speed. Educational efforts should for each individual cultivate the power of creative thinking and learning, as well as the drive to investigate freely in the course of studies and extracurricular activities, and skills for collecting, processing, and using knowledge. There is also a need to create a school setting that respects various methods of teaching as well as new cooperative learning exercises, a school setting that strengthens education to improve various kinds of abilities and talents, and one that can adapt to changes in the operations of educational courses and modes of assessments.

In order to cultivate people who have honest personalities and creative minds, schools must provide and support courses that are both substantial and specialized, while administrative institutions of education have to deploy the necessary activities to further support educational commitments.
